About KodebyKarl

Karl L. Darnayla

Founder and lead engineer, KodebyKarl

Karl writes the software himself, from the database to the screen. This is how a student who typed his first Hello World in 2020 became the engineer behind bus booking portals, a VPN platform and a growing studio.

2020

Hello, World

Karl wrote his first lines of code in 2020. They were simple Hello World scripts, nothing anyone would ever use, and he has described them as the moment he discovered his passion for software engineering.

From there he built his first static websites in HTML and CSS and learned the basics every programmer starts with: logic, loops and functions. The websites were small, but they were real pages that opened in a browser.

How do scalable enterprise platforms handle millions of requests while delivering instant, delightful user feedback?
The question he says his journey in software started with

2021

College, and teaching himself on the side

In 2021 he began formal IT studies. College gave him the foundations that tutorials skip: data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, database management and the principles of software engineering.

He kept a high academic standing while teaching himself engineering outside the classroom, and he took part in coding challenges and software workshops.

2022

The first clients were classmates

His first paid work came from fellow IT and computer science students. He built capstone systems, web tools and academic software for them in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and Bootstrap, usually against tight deadlines.

It gave him practical experience in client communication and in scoping a project, which he still uses with every client.

In the same year he worked as a web developer on the front end, turning wireframes into responsive interfaces in React and HTML and CSS, and checking that they behaved across browsers and devices.

2023

Going deep on the back end

In 2023 Karl turned toward what happens behind the screen. He spent the year on server-side engineering: relational database design, indexing, query optimization, and designing REST APIs.

He built authentication with JWT, sessions and password hashing and worked on backend security fundamentals. His tools were Node.js, Express, Python and PostgreSQL.

2024

Owning a project from database to interface

With the front end and the back end both in hand, he moved fully into full-stack work. He took ownership of web applications end to end, from the database design to the interface people click on.

He built multi-tier applications with React on the front and Express and Node.js on the server, and he integrated payment gateways, authentication and real-time state management.

True performance isn't an afterthought. It's an architectural decision made at day one.
On how he builds

2024 to 2025

Ten bus companies, one year

As a WordPress developer and IT intern, Karl's work reached national scale. He built and launched booking websites for more than ten Philippine bus companies, including ALPS The Bus, Cherry Bus, Ohayami, Elavil, Raymond, Candon, NextBus, DLTB, Bragais and Isarog.

These were not brochure sites. He wrote custom PHP booking modules, set up WooCommerce seat reservations, wired in payment gateways, tuned the WordPress databases and caching, and made the booking flow work on the phones most passengers use. Thousands of people book seats on them every day.

NextBus brought several of the operators together in one search, so a passenger can compare schedules and fares across more than fifty of them.

2025

A team job at Beam PH

In 2025 he worked as a full-stack developer at Beam PH. He built core features across the interface and the REST services behind it, worked with other teams to ship them, and optimized database queries and API response times so the product felt faster to the people using it.

2026

On his own, with a studio

Since 2026 Karl has worked on project-based contracts under the KodebyKarl name, delivering full-stack systems for clients in the Philippines and abroad.

The biggest is MCFG Cloud, a platform that gives network operators private VPN tunnels within seconds of payment, with live monitoring and a built-in wallet. It now serves more than 1,000 active users across five countries. He has also built a point of sale and inventory system, a hospital management system, and a real-time platform that streams live data over WebSockets.

Richelle Alvarez is his partner and handles client operations and social media. Together they have completed more than 30 projects.

Alongside the code

Networks and security

Karl also studies networking and security, mostly through the Cisco Networking Academy: CCNA courses, Network Defense, Endpoint Security and Ethical Hacker, plus Cyber Threat Management from the DICT-ITU initiative. That fits the VPN platform he built, which is a networking product.

Today

How he works, and where it is going

Clients talk to Karl directly. He explains things in plain language, gives honest timelines, and does not call a project done until it runs well in production. He wants the system he hands over to be something another developer can pick up and keep growing.

The aim is to grow KodebyKarl into one of the most trusted software companies in the Philippines, known for good engineering and for staying with its clients long after launch.
